Skeletal Orthodontic Anchorage (TADs)

In orthodontics this concept can become a problem when the orthodontist attempts to move a tooth by pushing or pulling it against adjacent teeth. If the teeth that are being pushed or pulled against do the moving and not the tooth intended to move this is called “loss of anchorage.” A new technology to aide your orthodontist in the movement of your teeth quicker and with more stability is called skeletal orthodontic anchorage. With this technology, specially designed small bone plates or pins can be placed in the jaw bone around or between teeth. This allows the orthodontist to use the bone as “anchorage”, not the teeth. These techniques can lead to faster and more successful orthodontic treatment.

Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) for orthodontic anchorage are widely accepted. They are changing the way orthodontists treat some patients’ malocclusions. TADs provide a fixed point from which to apply force to move teeth. They can be placed in many different sites in the mouth. Placement is customized for each patient. TADs may contribute to pre- dictable results, shorter treatment time and completion of active treatment on schedule.

These plates and pins can be placed during a short procedure, in the office, using local anesthesia. There is minimal postoperative pain and swelling. Usually, Tylenol or Motrin is all that is necessary for pain. Usually your orthodontist will start utilizing the device immediately. A few months later, when your orthodontist no longer needs the devices, they will require removal by your doctor. This is usually a very quick procedure, sometimes requiring minimal local anesthesia.
